The Victoria Film Festival returns for another year with a wide collection of films, thrillers and chillers for film-buffs, heavy metal and comedy enthusiasts to enjoy. Ron James of Black Fly and Mark McKinney of Kids in the Hall fame will be here to talk about their careers, For McKinney, a screening of the classic Brain Candy, follows afterwards. The shenanigans begin 11:30am on both days, Feb 7th and 8th.

For extreme sports enthusiasts, if getting to know the history of BASE jumping is important, Sunshine Superman is an excellent look at the life and times of Carl Boenish. His contributions made a difference in the early days when this sport was considered illegal.

In the music front, Sumé (Feb 6) is a rock band from Greenland who gets a special spotlight. This documentary explores how their music has empowered the Inuit community to fight for their own identity. Lambert & Stamp (Feb 7) looks at the rebellious youth culture of the 60’s and the influence of the band, The Who, amongst this generation. Big in Japan (Feb 6) goes “Cheap Trick” with alternative punk rock Seattle band Tennis Pro as they attempt to bridge political, cultural and personal boundaries.

Film-goers should take an interest in the world premiere of Trunk: The Movie (Feb 8), a taut, claustrophobic, psychological thriller later that day or The Lodge (Feb 9), a surreal stop-motion animation that brings to life the darkness of the land — should that be the mind where imagination can run rampant? Savagery and conquest is amongst the themes said to come to life.

But for true terror, there’s a few genre films this year to give viewers a treat. It Follows (Feb 14) has the allegorical depth of an 80’s slasher flick, and Wild Tales (Feb 12) plays with the adage that revenge is a dish best served cold.
