By Mal Content
AU: Who’s in the band?
Dany Roberge: Matthieu Dhani – vocals, lyrics; Tom Chiasson – guitar; Guy-Pierre Genest – guitar; Olivier Roy – guitar, vocals, lyrics, production; Dany Roberge – bass, vocals, lyrics, management; Sébastien Lalonde-Ricordi – drums.
AU: Give us GET THE SHOT’s history!
DR: Hailing straight from Quebec City, Canada, GET THE SHOT is a hardcore band formed in 2009. After more than 700 concerts on three continents, including some on the biggest international stages such as Wacken, Hellfest, FEQ and Resurrection Fest, the six members remain committed to the core values of authenticity, integrity and equality at the heart of the hardcore movement.
AU: How does GET THE SHOT’s sound fit into the music scene there?
DR: Our music incorporates elements of thrash, death metal, hardcore and punk, creating an intense and brutal sound that keeps the energy up. Inspired by iconic bands such as Hatebreed, Obituary and Slayer, we have developed a unique style of extreme music.
AU: Having released four albums since formation in 2009, how does your upcoming EP, Crucifixion Depiction, stand out in your discography? Any new inspirations?
DR: This EP was created organically. We removed ourselves from any distraction to create without thinking about external perceptions. It’s a Polaroid of a tumultuous time.
AU: If possible, describe some of the process of writing and creating your upcoming EP, Crucifixion Depiction.
DR: This album was created in two sessions, one in a rustic cabin in the Canadian woods and another one in Paris between two legs of a tour. All the songs, including lyrics, were crafted as a group and not individually.
AU: What song is each member the proudest of, to date?
DR: I think a short song like “Strained” makes us proud. It was created in one hour based on improvisation. Just raw power.
AU: What kind of stage presence does GET THE SHOT have?
DR: Really explosive. It’s like a switch going on. It’s like we’re seeing red.
AU: What do you want audiences to take away from your music, live or otherwise?
DR: I want the audience to view our art as a whole universe. That includes a cohesion between music, lyrics, graphics and videos. We bring an atmosphere and some visuals, and the audience can appropriate it and do their own interpretation.
AU: GET THE SHOT has recently had some member changes. What do you predict the new members will add to your established sound?
DR: Only Matt is a new member, and he brings a very introspective approach to our craft. He has a wide range of vocals and is very open to trying anything new that will serve the purpose of the songs. Guyp was with the band for more than 10 years and represents the roots of our sound.
AU: Any plans for Halloween this year?
DR: We will play Corefest in Göttingen, Germany, alongside our friends Paleface Swiss and Thrown. We will surely have a great party.
AU: What are some of your favourite horror movies? Any obscure ones?
DR: Nothing too obscure, but we are really inspired by body horror with practical effects. American Werewolf in London, The Thing and, more recently, The Substance were a huge inspiration for our latest video, “Crucifixion Depiction”.
AU: Any weird Halloween traditions?
DR: Watch as many horror movies as possible.
AU: In your opinion, what’s the best horror soundtrack?
DR: John Carpenter’s Halloween is by far the best original music. It is good to mention that it was also really cool when mainstream horror movies were putting on some metal soundtracks, like the Saw franchise, Queen of the Damned or Freddy vs. Jason.
AU: Do you believe in ghosts?
DR: I am more scared of losing my own sanity than ghosts.
AU: Do you have anything else to promote or any last words for our readers?
DR: Check out our most recent video, “Crucifixion Depiction”. It was made by Anthony Altamura and his team. We included some practical effects as a nod to our favourite horror movies. Our previous video, “Torture Your Corpse”, was also influenced by Evil Dead and Eggers’ Nosferatu in some way.
AU: Do you have any upcoming live shows that readers should look out for tickets for?
DR: We will hit Europe this fall and our very own Quebec City to celebrate the release of the EP.
AU: Where can readers find you online?
DR: gettheshothc.com is a good central point. I recommend opting in to our communication and Instagram broadcast channel if you wanna learn more about our vision and process.
