In a sleepy sea-side town located in the tip of a jagged island, something dark and eldritch will arrive in festive form. On August 20th, it’s H.P. Lovecraft’s birthday and the idea to host a party was an instant idea for author and former radio host, Scott Jones.

In Saskatoon, he hosted a late night spoken word show called Weird Tales. It was rated as the top insomniac’s program on CFCR 98.5 FM when it aired. And with him now based in Victoria, he’s looking for new projects to tackle. Taking place at the Solstice Café, this show promises to be huge.

“It’s a Friday night and it’s his 120th birthday,” says Jones.

Since moving to Victoria, Jones have come in contact with a number of performers, improv people, musicians and comedians who are huge fans of Lovecraft’s works. When he approached them about putting on a show, they were thrilled. Lovecraft’s influence in culture is huge. In music, film and print, he has left an indelible stamp amongst society in ways. In his own muddled language: It’s euclidean. It’s sandwiched into our psyche in such an indignant way but seething to our consciousness.

“I love the themes of cosmic xenophobia and things that man was not meant to know in his works,” says Jones.

In his own writing, he loves the way Lovecraft wrote. “But I’ve gravitated from that style now. I still continue to love the themes he explores,” adds Jones.

He believes these are the concepts that actually speak to the masses.

“After you read some of his works, you may think it’s not that great. It’s that spirit inside of him, the spirit inside the story that’s wonderful,” says Jones.

And he’s going to channel that spirit in a birthday bash that’s rarely seen. While the focus is going to be with poetry readings and stage performances, people shouldn’t forget there’s more to Lovecraft than just the written word. He’s inspired many generations of musicians from Gwar to Metallica and this event has an exclusive screening of David Prior’s award-winning film AM 1200.

“The thing about H.P. Lovecraft is that he infects the culture. If you know him, you can see his effect on it.”

With stars like Eric Lange (Entourage), Ray Wise (Twin Peaks) and John Billingsley (Out of Time) in this film, the tale of terror told here is genuinely creepy. It’s very Lovecraftian in its own unique way.

According to Jones, it’s done right minus all the cheesy, occult or gothic references found in some older films. With various contests and prizes to win at this event too, let’s hope the only thing gained is one’s sanity.

Investigating the Unknown at the Maritime Museum

   Posted by: Absolute Underground TV

Since the days of old, interest in investigating the world of the supernatural have always existed in one form or another. But as time went on that attraction waned. With television shows like Most Haunted and Ghost Hunters becoming very popular on speciality television stations, chasing after ghosts is back in the spotlight again, but audiences are only able to watch it happen than really participate.

Paranormal Investigator Dawn Kirkham is looking to change all that on May 1st. She has more than three years worth of experience from investigating haunted places all over the UK and is inviting the public to come find the ghosts said to be lurking at the Maritime Museum in Victoria, BC.

“I want to build a portfolio of venues so that the public can go on an investigation all over the Island,” says Kirkham.

“My aim is not only to open up reputedly haunted places for the public to investigate but also to give them an opportunity to participate in an authentic investigation.”

While these locations have to be rented out, these kinds of opportunities doesn’t happen all the time. Opportunity comes knocking every once in a while, but if one looks around it’s not just rappings one may find during an overnight stay. Sometimes, according to Kirkham, an investigation will have absolutely nothing happen, and at other times, a variety of spiritual activity going on.

“We’ve had physical manifestations, audible noises, people being touched and stones thrown,” notes Kirkham.

The list does not end there, and going on an investigation is not all about fun and games.

“All of my investigations are covered with stringent conditions, like about the right type of footwear to put on and how to use the gear properly, but more importantly about personal behaviour. That’s covered before any investigation starts,” says Kirkham.

“From a spiritual point of view, we always do an opening up and protection exercise so everyone is protected as well.”

According to Kirkham, there has been no real harm done to those curiousity seekers who’ve gone on an investigation with her, but one still has to be careful. With her teaching future investigators proper etiquette, looking for ghosts can yield interesting results.
“People have been quite frightened at times, but that’s part of the fun,” says Kirkham, winking.
